Northam Preview & Selections Thursday July 17
Posted on 15/07/2008 | Posted by Geoff Whittle | Back to News Archive

William Pike will be back from suspension at Northam on Thursday and there is no doubt that he will hit the ground running and is sure to be prominent in several races. He also has several good rides at Belmont on Wednesday in his struggle for the city jockeys premiership with rival Paul Harvey.

Pikes first ride back at Northam after his suspension will be in race three where he will accompany Neville Parnhams Last Curtain.

But Thursday will be a much bigger one for apprentice Chanelle OGrady who will have her first race ride in race one aboard Tara Clatworthys Which Way Didhe Go.

Everyone at Northam Race club wishes you the best Chanelle.

The running rail goes back to the six-metre mark this Thursday and runners will compete on fresh pad.

In race one, the Eat More Fruit and Veg Maiden over 1100 metres, apprentice Tengku Rehaizats mount Extra Grand is the hardest to beat.

Race one is typical of the maidens on Thursday, very hard to analyse, but after her second to Master Marlon two weeks ago, Extra Grand should be in the action when the whips are cracking. Adam Durrants beautifully bred debutante Follow The Road has revealed talent at trials being placed to subsequent winner Texas To Maine. The gelding is by Testa Rossa and is an offspring listed winner Follow Gold. Pipe Of Blue and Aptodeti are place chances.

The Eat More Fruit 1100 metre Maiden is also very open but The Golden Dynamo improved at his second start to finish a 1½ length third to Isinpursuit on June 26. Further improvement will see him go very close to winning and give jockey Peter Farrell a welcome change of luck. Got Nuthin Ta Fear resumes and can go well fresh after running fifth at Ascot first up and third on the same track in March to Raise A Light. Real Scene, Adazzle and Arcade Attraction must also be considered.

New Faith was unlucky when a fast finishing second, ¾ of a length astern of Briccone last week on the track over 1600 metres. The well-bred filly was held up between the 400 and 200 metres in that event and although not drawn well on Thursday has the advantage of having Paul Harvey aboard. Demelzas Wings and Genuine Silence both ran creditable placings on the track at their last starts and there are at least seven other runners with something in their form to recommend them. Jevlotto, Last Curtain and the big horse, Merlin Magic, are genuine chances but you cant tip them all.

It gets no easier in race four over 1300 metres. Money Money should improve on her fourth in Master Marlons race on July 3rd. The Paul Harvey mount will go close for trainer Raquel Mills if she reproduces her effort when third behind Crown Of Caitlin at Ascot in January. Raunchy Business ran well to take third behind runaway winner World Of Our Own at Northam last time while Jump N Jive resumes but has ability. Both can trouble Money Money. Gambero and October Rose both resume and are drawn poorly but ran good races on the Bunbury track at their last starts.

Although he does not win out of turn, At Long Last is overdue after consecutive seconds to Clasliyev, Halos For Us and Clarecastle on the Avon Valley track. Shane Gilchrists 2kg claim and a favourable draw should see him prominent. Publicans Horse was mentioned heavily in the Stewards report last start and the run should be forgotten. Good seconds previously are a better indication of his chances. Genana led all the way on a front-runners track last week. It will be harder here but young apprentice Joseph See has found some confidence.

Local trainer Garth Jackson has a good record on his home track and Dr Phil can continue his good run in race six. The gelding raced in fifth position before running on the beat Demelzas Wings over the distance of this race, 1600 metres. Both Briccone and Akheson also won over the distance and on the track last week. Briccone did it first up and Akheson who led on a leader-biased track is well treated with Simone Altieris 3kg allowance. Vernas Boy is sure to run well also for Pinjarra trainer Brett Pope.

I am tipping William Pike to bounce back into the winners list in race seven, the 2200 metre Healthway Handicap on the Spencer Knight prepared Hallowell Mist. The mare has a lot in her favour, she is fit, goes well on the track and should slot in beautifully from barrier two. She ran on for third two weeks ago behind Oceans Twelve and won previously on the track. Halos For Us was a strong win over 1600 metres after racing three wide for the entire trip. Steps up 600-metres here but was an unlucky fourth over the distance on the track in December. Recent track winner Prince Of Promise should perform well again.

Although she rising in class, Precocious Lady will be hard to catch in the final event judging by her hollow 4¾ length win in maiden company at Kalgoorlie on July 6. The grey should lead for Jessica Valas and the 1100 metres suits in the slightly stronger class. Last start Northam winners Master Marlon and Isinpursuit should be respected. Master Marlon does not rise in weight on his last start win and will carry the moderate impost of 54.5kg.
