Timperley remains involved with WA racing

Former Perth Steward Jason Timperleys career took a very different path late last year when he landed a job in the Bloodstock Department for leviathan trainer David Hayes. Timperley is now based at Flemington and a large part of his role is finding homes for horses that dont quite meet the standard required. Due to his background in Western Australia, it is not surprising that many of these horses find their way to the West. There is a recurring theme when doing my country articles and looking at the numerous new horses to the state ex David Hayes and purchases through Jason Timperley. I spoke to Jason recently about his job, one that must give him great pleasure. Most people naturally assume that they can never have a horse trained by David Hayes, but that is not the case. We regularly get horses sent to Lindsay Park to be assessed and David is very keen to give every horse a chance. The horses are prepared at arguably the best facilities in the country, with the best technology and overseen by David and his quality staff, so they really do get every chance to show their best. The bottom line is they must be metropolitan standard over here (Melbourne) to pay their way. David is very honest with his owners about a horses ability, as it is not in anyones interest to keep a horse in training that is not going to make it. Many of our owners are only interested in racing in the city, so this is where I come in he said. I have seen nearly every race track in WA and have a pretty good idea of the standard of racing in each region. I think most horses can win races if they are placed in the right spot. We always have unraced or lightly raced horses that have still got plenty of racing left in them that are genuine good buys for a country trainer. It is quite satisfying when horses that we sell do well in their new environment. Our ex-horses have had great results in WA in the last couple of months. Spoonmaker was a two-start maiden before coming to Geoff Rodier in Carnarvon, where he has won his first two races up on the Gascoyne track. Eden Park (Peter Fernie) won 2 of its first 3 in Kalgoorlie, Jeux DEsprit (a win and a 2nd in two Broome starts) and Red Hot Poker (4 consecutive 2nd places in the Pilbara) are other recent former Hayes runners. Not to mention last start Belmont winner Youlwin and of course Belmont Guineas winner Cohort, he added. Jeux DEsprit bolted in at Broome on Saturday, winning by seven lengths to give him two wins from three starts. Cohort will start as short priced favourite in this Saturdays $70,000 Listed Belmont Classic over 2200 metres and should rack up another big race win. I think most of the people that I met when I was Stewarding trust that I am going to give an honest assessment, and that is important because I would like to ensure that we have a long term market for our horses. Now that the prize money in Perth is so good, owners are now able to target city class horses from the East. Purple Chocolate and Dajraan have both been sold to Western Australian clients recently and they should both go very well in Perth, Timperley explained. The other exciting part of my job is seeing good horses from Perth arrive in the stable to target the bigger races in the east. Mansion House, Glory Hunter and Calico Blue are all in training and we are looking forward to seeing them at the races. Translate (WA Guineas place getter) is now one of the stable favourites over here and she got within a length and a half of super mare Divine Madonna when she ran 2nd in the G1 Myer Classic last spring. We now have an assortment of tried and unraced horses available as well as shares in yearlings to be trained by David Hayes. I am keen to talk to anyone to discuss their requirements. Jason can be reached on 0488 066 149 and jason@lindsaypark.com.au
