Northam Preview & Selections Thursday July 10
Posted on 8/07/2008 | Posted by By Geoff Whittle | Back to News Archive

Champion jockey Paul Harvey should be prominent at Northam on Thursday with five rides and I am tipping him to win three races.

Buzzorpen in the third event, Tyracanrun engaged in the fourth and the Raquel Mills prepared Cielo Du Fuego, running in the last are Harveys best chances. Good trial performer Briccone is another excellent chance for The Pontiff in race one but I am of the opinion the he and others will lower their colours to Bandalera in that event.

Race one, the 1600 metre Tim Mosel Memorial Three-Year-Old Maiden looks to be tailor made for Neville Parnhams Bandalera. The Scenic filly ran on strongly from 13th when third to Osh Empire over 1400 metres and I consider that the extra distance here is ideal for the horse and jockey Stephen Parnham. Close Shave narrowly beat Bandalera last start and is a danger. Akkachar and Briccone are next best.

The Thelma Winch 1600 metre Maiden involves several chances but Lou Lucianis Blackfriars filly Black Habit gets her chance after good city form. She has run fourth to Storm Inthe North over 1650 metres and 2nd to Dantes Gold at Belmont recently. Merlin Magic, Right I Am and Skitzo have Northam form and all can win without surprise.

After his 5th behind Quiz Time at Belmont in 0-75 company, Buzzorpen will be the testing material dropping back into the 1300 metre Charles Winch Memorial Maiden. Tick Tock is close to a win, Leuwin Star should race better with a sit and Show Storm rates with the chances.

Tyracanrun, engaged in race four, the 1100 metre Heather Coulter Memorial Maiden, went down narrowly in a blanket three-way finish last time at Northam on June 19. The filly was beaten by a nose and a short head when 3rd behind Western Standard. Moonemia and Pirates Gold resume but ran encouraging seconds at Bunbury earlier in the year.

Last start Northam winner Honour Of Denmark can win again for new rider Shane Gilchrist in race five, the Roger Smith Memorial Handicap over 1100 metres. Backmarker Blazing Gun will run on strongly, Blow Me Down should be improved and Henry The Pharaoh should go well although not being well weighted compared to Honour Of Denmark who he ran 2nd to last start.

Beau Of Indies, running in the Graeme Mosel Handicap was luckless last run when 4th in Halos For Us race last Thursday on the track. He finished hard on the heels of the placegetters after being impeded for a run and Tengku Rehaizats 3 kilo claim is a bonus. Prince Of Promise and North And South are both in form on the track.

The Café Bugatti Handicap over 1300 metres may see diminutive apprentice Yannick Valenti ride his first provincial winner on the talented Mexican Lass who was an impressive winner at Bunbury in February. Valenti has had 19 rides & won on Diocletian at Leonora last month. Pimpala Domino is a place chance as are Doctor Golden and Prince Khaddad.

The K.R.A.S.Y Handicap over 1300 metres should see winning Northam form prominent through Key Biscuit and Pal Talk. Key Biscuit won his maiden narrowly on June 26 and is from an in form stable. Pal Talk finally broke through last run on June 19 and can go on with it now. Sexy Babe can figure also.

Paul Harvey has a good strike rate with Raquel Mills trained runners and they can combine to win again in the 1400 metre Bugatti Catering Handicap with Cielo Du Fuego. The gelding came from last on the turn to nab Lomondside Lass near the line over 1300 metres on June 19 to score his second Northam win. Mezzegie performed well at his first WA start to finish 2nd behind the talented Snooperclyde at the track on June 26. He has won 2nd up at the Gold Coast and should be in the action here. Clunky Hero for young Yannick Valenti and Sandpatch are place hopes.
