Northam Preview September 8
Posted on 7/09/2011 | Back to News Archive
Allen McNamara Jnr will travel to Northam this afternoon full of hope that his team of two can play a major role in each of their respective races. Fiery Fox, a four-year-old gelding by Stormy’s Son, will line up in the Kahlua Handicap over 1100m and will strip fitter after a strong first-up second at the same track on August 28. Under the guidance of jockey Peter Hall, Fiery Fox jumped quickly from his inside draw to track frontrunner Break Sea who led all the way to win by 1 ¾ lengths. It was a positive run from Fiery Fox and precisely what McNamara Jnr would have been expecting after he displayed excellent form when last in work at his first preparation for the stable. The former David Harrison-prepared galloper relished the Great Southern environment to land consecutive wins and a second placing from his first three appearances. Stable mate King Choisir will be out to improve on a top first-up run when he contests the Perrier Jouet Maiden (1400m). The Choisir gelding was having his first start in eight months when he rattled home late with a flourishing run from the back of the field to be placed third over 1000m at midweek programme at Belmont Park a fortnight ago. With Paul Harvey in the saddle King Choisir finished 1 ¾ lengths from Smitheringale in the fastest final 600m sectional of the race. It was King Choisir’s first placing in five starts after spending the earlier part of his career under the stewardship of Frank Maynard. Hardest to beat will be Straleta who is knocking the door of victory and is ready to prise it open on the back of her past two performances. The Shane Edwards mare ran second to Yamunotri at Belmont before a ¾ length third to Undercover Lizzy after being trapped wide throughout. The Stratum four-year-old has drawn ideally in barrier five and with the services of Peter Knuckey is certain to attract attention from supporters. Stable mate Vacillare is another who is getting closer to that elusive win and gets her opportunity in the Chivas Regal Maiden (1400m). At her third run in from a spell at Northam late last month the Trade Fair mare fell a nose short to Notaclue after running on from sixth on the corner. She has again drawn out wide in barrier 12 and jockey William White will have to either work hard for the lead or take a position from behind. Keep a watch on Love The Faith who is ready to race after three trials for trainer Jim Taylor. Metallica in the Jacobs Creek Maiden (1000m) is another worth considering after tuning up with a solid trial performance over 1100m at Belmont Park. Prepared by Kellie Grantham, the four-year-old is returning after consecutive fourth placings to Caves Road and Kim Classic at her first two starts earlier this year. If in-form apprentice Michael Grantham can overcome barrier 12 she is in with solid claims but healthy respect must be afforded to Classical Snow and Seattle Beau. In the 2200m staying event, the Malibu Handicap, Ajexia can bounce back after going down as the unplaced favourite at Belmont last week. Though beaten she was too far from them and her earlier form warrants consideration again and Maruse will appreciate the step-up in journey and will be hard to beat. The last of the day, the Absolut Handicap (1300m), looks a winnable race for Red Mercedes who in two starts back has fallen short by half-a-length and a short neck. Celtic Rock hasn’t raced since April but did finish second to Barakey in a recent barrier trial and Amberstroem will strip fitter for his two runs. The Brancott Maiden (1600m) looks a competitive race with a number of chances including Foxatori who ran hard when second to the talented Rubitawny on August 25. Ken’s Business will get a gun run from barrier one, Soonest is racing well as is Adira who is searching for her first win since crossing from New South Wales. In the opener of the programme, the GH Mumm Maiden (1000m), Deejar and Caldo looking reasonable winning chances and a watch on debutant Stellar Enterprise who trialled well.
