Northam Preview July 1

The good form of dual-code trainer Mark Reed should continue at Northam this afternoon. Reed, who produced Peach Tree to a brilliant first-up win at Belmont last week and is preparing the Bel Esprit filly for this Saturday’s Belmont Oaks, has several strong chances including stable mates Best Beware and Kalahahni in the Heytesbury Stud Standing Saxon Handicap (2200m) and Monby in the Northam Matriarch Cup-Thursday 29th July Handicap (1100m). Kalahahni, a Scenic five-year-old, has been racing consistently this campaign with one win and three placings from five starts and you can expect him to be running home powerfully. Best Beware has had two starts back since returning from the eastern states and is warming to his task nicely. He got shuffled back towards the rear of the field at his last-start but worked home strongly to be placed less than three lengths from Manilla I Scream and if he can reproduce that run he will be hard to hold out. Monby, an Akhenaton five-year-old with two wins and six placings from 22 starts, will be making his debut for the Reed stable. He’s had three runs back this campaign, with his best effort a last-start third to Acheson on June 9, when he attacked the line strongly and it will be interesting to see his progress under a new trainer. David Harrison will be unveiling Come Party, a three-year-old Comfy gelding, in the Heytesbury Stud Standing Husson Lightning Maiden (1300m). He gives every indication of being quite talented with two trial starts for two very good wins and has solid first up claims. Melody Lady produced the best run of her four start career with a neck second to Philby a fortnight ago and the Ben Pearce-trained galloper will attempt to go one better in the Durham Lodge Standing Universal Ruler Maiden (1300m). The Sharon Miller-trained Zebook makes his return to racing after a short break and will attempt to break his maiden status in the Rocliffe Stud Standing Speilmeister Maiden (1400m). He is as honest as they come with seven placings from nine starts and deserves to land that elusive win for connections. He has drawn wide but does enter the race on the back of a good trial win and will have the services of Paul Harvey aboard. Miller will also have a smart type going around in the opening event of the day: the Avon Community Development Foundation Inc Maiden (1100m). Black Dane, a Blackfriars filly, will make her debut and was super impressive when winning a recent barrier trial by over three lengths.
