The Prince Is Back At Northam
Posted on 25/05/2010 | Posted by Julio Santarelli | Back to News Archive

One man who is very much looking forward to Thursday’s meeting at Northam is trainer Todd Harvey.

Harvey will saddle up Catch A Dream in the Tom Eeles Memorial Maiden (1100m) and Storm Front in the R.M Smith & Sons Handicap (1400m) but it’s the return of Prince Una in the President’s Handicap (1100m) that has him most excited.

The son of Universal Prince is making his first visit to the track in just over a year following an injury scare that threatened to derail a promising career.

A serious cannon bone injury ensured he was off the scene for eight months and may have also explained why his form tailed off towards the end of his last campaign.

He raced three times for three unplaced efforts which was a far cry from the form he displayed when he first burst onto the scene at Northam in September 2008.

He had five starts for one win and three placings and the only time he missed the money was in the Listed Fairetha Stakes when he finished sixth and less than three lengths from the winner Grand Nirvana.

Such was his form at the time and based on Harvey’s  a high opinion of the horse he was seriously considering a tilt at the Belmont Guineas but elected to bypass the race after discussion with jockey Paul Harvey.

It was felt he wasn’t quite up to the level required at that stage of his development.

At present Harvey isn’t concerned about any Listed or Group plans and is pouring all his effort into ensuring a talented racehorse returns to racing safely and successfully.

“I’m really looking forward to his return after such an extended period out through injury,” said Harvey.

“He looks good and had a nice solid trial effort as a tune up.

“He appears to have overcome all his injury concerns and if he is back racing to his best he should be all over this field.”

Harvey is banking on maturity and natural development as the key to Catch A Dreams chances in the opening event of the afternoon.

The Oratorio filly has looked impressive at her only two race starts including a first up third to the talented Motion Pictures.

“She didn’t really know what it was all about during her first preparation,” Harvey said.

“She looks switched on now and will improve no matter what she does.

“But she runs into a nice type in Pintada Prince who blew them away in a recent barrier trial in very smart time.”

Storm Front has looked okay in two runs back and is the type of horse who could easily bob up and win the last race of the day.

A nice draw in barrier three and the services of Damian Lane will certainly not harm his prospects.

“His form has been reasonable without winning,” Harvey said.

“I think we will see the better of him when he stretches to the mile and beyond but he won’t be too far away in a race that is not overly strong.”
