Tearinupthecountry Wins York Cup
Posted on 14/10/2009 | Posted by Julio Santarelli | Back to News Archive

The Alan Mathews-trained Tearinupthecountry has taken out the 2009 Dallimore Carpet Choice York Cup at Northam this afternoon.

The Pentire gelding brought up win number eight by defeating Collecting and Mystical Xaar with Wanna Play Doctor back in fourth place.

The veteran galloper indicated he was working back into form with a last start second to Marine Drive when beaten by a neck and that run was franked with a solid effort today.

Prior to that run he had failed to run a place in ten starts with his last win occurring back in early January with victory in the Tapdog Handicap over the mile.

But he proved too powerful this afternoon arriving with a well-timed run to get over the top of Collecting who put in another consistent effort.

The four-year-old mare has raced seven times this campaign for two wins and four placings and again today refused to give in when passed by the winner and was making another desperate effort on the line to fight all the way.

Mystical Xaar did well to be placed third and Wanna Play Doctor put in a brave effort to hang on for fourth after setting the pace and doing all the work early.

It was only the fifth start of her career and her first trip over the mile and her effort would no doubt have pleased connections and trainer Grant Williams.

Goldtown had a perfect trail but failed to run on and Impact Rating finished a long way from the winner and never looked likely.

The disappointment of the race was the performance of the favourite Cohort who was placed last and is proving costly for punters.

Harvey settled the Scenic gelding towards the rear of the field and commenced what appeared like a winning move approaching the corner, but he failed to go on with it and tailed off a long last.
