Goldtown To Run A Race: Wolfe
Posted on 13/10/2009 | Posted by Julio Santarelli | Back to News Archive

Steve Wolfe travels to Northam on Wednesday with a two-pronged attack to contest the $35,000 Dallimore Carpet Choice York Cup (2200m).

Goldtown and Impact Rating will spearhead the Wolfe challenge but while supremely confident about one of his charges he is less than convinced about the second.

“I am confident Goldtown can run a really good race,” Wolfe said.

“I think whatever beats him in the race will win.”

Goldtown produced a solid effort last start when running home strongly to be placed third behind Marine Drive at Belmont Park when beaten by less than a length.

That performance followed three tough runs in Kalgoorlie when finishing just out of the placings in the Coolgardie, Boulder and Kalgoorlie Cups.

“If the Kalgoorlie Cup was run last week I’m certain he would have run second in the race behind Gondorff,” Wolfe said.

“He was just a fortnight behind but I’m more than happy with his form leading into the York Cup.”

It’s been a long time between drinks for Impact Rating with his last win the Esperance Cup earlier in the year.

He performed creditably in Kalgoorlie without setting the world on fire but it was a last start failure at Belmont Park that has Wolfe concerned about his prospects.

“To be perfectly honest I was really disappointed with his effort when last to Marine Drive,” Wolfe said.

“It’s hard to seeing him improving enough to be a threat in the York Cup.”

Wolfe will also saddle up My Equine Friend in the opening event of the afternoon: the Dallimore Floating Timber Floors Maiden (1000m).

The three-year-old gelding has displayed promise with two minor placings from three starts but Wolfe doesn’t believe a maiden win will be arriving on Wednesday.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to see Lou Luciani’s Lady Xaar make her appearance on the race track,” Wolfe said.

“She finished second in a trial to Wolfe Dreams last year and if she races anywhere near her top I don’t see how we can beat it.”
