Double Celebration For Skitzo Win
Posted on 19/08/2009 | Posted by Julio Santarelli | Back to News Archive

It will be cause for double celebration at Northam this afternoon if Tribu gelding Skitzo scores a maiden win in the Keep Sheep WA Maiden (1600m).

For the seven year-old gelding it will break a frustrating run of minor placings and for Williams a wonderful opportunity to kick-start her nascent training career.

"It would be such a positive experience if we can manage to register our maiden wins," Williams said.

"It would be the perfect start to my training career but also reward a wonderful group of people who have been so supportive of me.

"My partner and father have been such magnificent help and as part-owners of the horse they will get as big a thrill as I will if we manage to win."

Williams had a career path in racing mapped out since she was sixteen years of age when she commenced work in the stables of Christine Stelmach and Graham Yuill.

She then travelled extensively overseas to Europe and the United States where she worked in show jumping before returning home and reuniting with former mentor Graham Yuill.

It was Yuill's inspiration that encouraged Williams to take the plunge and dip her toes into training.

"Graham was full of support and encouragement," Williams said.

"He provided me the confidence to branch out on my own.

"And it was through my association with him that I was able to acquire Skitzo

"I have two fillies about to trial but Skitzo is the only horse from my team that is racing.

"He's had two starts for a first-up third at Northam before a last start second to Brandy Lane at Belmont Park."

Sentimentality aside it was the nature of those two runs that should attract support from punters this afternoon.

He has been honest and tough and the services of champion jockey Paul Harvey won't harm his chances.

"His last run at Belmont was a good example of how tough he is," Williams said.

"He was caught wide but still fought it out to the line and never gave in."

"He doesn't possess a great turn of foot but what he does possess is heart and courage."
