Vain Rooney To Score Northam Win
Posted on 12/08/2009 | Posted by Julio Santarelli | Back to News Archive

If punters are looking for small omens then perhaps Vain Rooney is one to look out for ahead of todays meeting at Northam.

The Kenvain gelding might attract some novelty interest on the eve of the English Premier League season, but in all seriousness the Rebecca Nairn trained 4-year-old should attract attention based solely on his breakthrough win at Northam a fortnight ago.

He led from pillar to post to record a narrow victory over the Golden Dynamo and a similar performance this afternoon would go a long ways towards securing back-to-back victories.

"He has come through that race really well," Nairn said.

"He has taken time to mature but has displayed flashes of form previously without winning.

"He doesn't possess an enormous amount of class but is very honest and keeps on trying.

"Now that he has found the winning formula he should keep improving.

"The 1400 metre journey will assist his chances."

Punters should expect improvement from the Michael Pateman-trained Sky La Belle in race one of the day: the Wake Up With Mic Maiden (1300m).

The three-year-old filly is unplaced from three starts but Pateman has a fair opinion of her ability.

"She is quite a handy filly," Pateman said.

"She didn't get a lot of galloping room at her last start but jockey Clint Harvey said she hit the line well and indicated she is looking for more ground."

Akheson gets the chance to return the winners list in the Sunday Wake Up With Paul Handicap (1600m).

The seven-year-old put in a rare shocker last start when placed last behind Game Park at Belmont Park on 29 July.

But Pateman is expecting improvement this afternoon.

"It doesn't look an overly strong field," Pateman said.

"The trick with him is to find the front and lead.

"He hasn't been able to do that recently against some real speedsters.

"If he can reach the front I believe he will be hard to beat."

The Paul Jordan-trained Wire Tapper looks set to break his maiden status in the Access All Areas With Danni McCallum Maiden (1400m).

He has been placed four times from six starts and is desperately close to a win.

His last start second at the track was full of merit and a similar performance today and he will be extremely hard to beat.
