MCSTARK A WINNING CHANCE AT NORTHAM
Posted on 17/06/2009 | Posted by Julio Santarelli | Back to News Archive

Rebecca Nairn ventures to Northam on Thursday supremely confident that McStark can bounce back to the winners list in the Gannons Handicap (2200m).

The McFlirt gelding was a last start second to Minnie May over the 1600 metre journey but the step back to 2200 metres will be right up his alley and if he races to form will hard to beat.

“I’m very confident he will run a big race,” Nairn said.

“He’s pulled up a treat from his last run and you wouldn’t think he has been around.

“He will get a nice soft run from barrier two and will be there in the finish.”

McStark broke through for his maiden win at Northam on May 3 but followed that win with a disappointing sixth to Offer Me Jewels at his next start.

But according to Nairn the four-year-old was a victim of circumstances and punters should discount his performance.

“He had no luck at all and forget he went around,” Nairn said.

“Willie Pike was forced to send him back near last after drawing a wide barrier and he met interference all the way down the straight.

“I though he battled home okay under the circumstances.”

While Nairn displays confidence about the prospects of McStark she is more circumspect about the chances of Step And Go in the Go For 2&5 Maiden (1300m).

The Dante’s Fury gelding has dominated his three trials but can’t seem to produce the same effort on race day.

“He is a trial freak,” Nairn said.

“Under pressure he is a little soft.

“But in saying that his form on paper doesn’t read as bad as it appears.

“At his last start he had no luck at all and was blocked for a clear run in the straight.

“I was reasonably happy with the way he fought out the race.

“And the start prior at Pinjarra he led for a fair way before fading and that was the race that Nomunnofun set a record in.

“I would be genuinely disappointed if he didn’t finish in the first three.”
